It’s essential that you recognize when you’re living out of balance.
“Are you out of your mind?” That’s a common expression we hear. It implies imbalance in thought processes.
But there are three other factors in our being that could go out of balance: body, heart, soul.
You’re “out of your body” when your natural immune system is not able to defend you from viruses.
You’re “out of your heart” when you get numb or unaware of what you’re feeling.
You’re “out of your soul” when you cheat, lie, or kill others.
The mind-body-heart-soul link. That’s where you do check up when you’re living out of balance.
A lack of balance is costly.
Mentally, Pete, a patient, has lost perspective. Physically, he’s overworked. Emotionally, he drops the ball on treating himself lovingly.
His lack of balance results in all sorts of self sabotaging addictions in his life.
Pornography. Sex with prostitutes. Alcoholism. Shabu addiction. Rage. Overspending. Spiritual emptiness.
Psychologist Dr. Dan Neuhart advised about how to “treat” your mind, body, and heart together for life balance.
He writes,
“Think of your mind, body, and heart as gifted children. You’re the parent. Each of your children deserves all the compassion you can offer. As you would with a gifted child, offer your mind, body, and heart adventures uniquely suited to each. From time to time, tune in and let each have what it wants and needs. If your body wants to fantasize, analyze, do crosswords, daydream or tell jokes, let it. If your heart wants to socialize, be alone, cry, laugh, hurt, or soar, let it.”
The soul is basic as well. It completes the 4 core elements of our whole being.
As a parent to your mind, body, heart, and soul take a moment and ask yourself this question: “Which of my children most needs attention right now?”
What does my mind need?
What does my body need?
What does my heart need?
What does my soul need?
Check in always with your “children” to live in balance. Fulfill their yearnings in a healthy way.
