Do Beat Your Fears

Do beat your fears!

According to well known psychologist and author Dr. Dan Neuharth, fears are “perceived deficits.”

Ignore it? Hide it? Deny it? Look the other way? Pretend? Overreact? Narcotize it?

If you try any of these, you’re not overcoming your fears. Instead, you risk alienating and harming your self.

Nurse Leo was the brother of a female client who’s a nurse too and working in London.

Unfortunately, the hospital where Leo worked laid him off. Only after a few months in working duty.

This loss of a job triggered unbearable fears and concerns in Leo.

Instead of beating his emotional fears, Leo hanged himself.

Losses, such as a job, possession, or relationship, is the obvious problem. But it’s not the core problem.

The core problem is unresolved, unbeaten fears, which Dr. Neuharth diagnosed as “perceived deficits.”

They refer to a perception of what is missing or lacking when you experiences losses.

The losses could trigger serious inner fear of perceived deficits. Such as, that you’re bad, incompetent, flawed, or a failure.

What’s missing or lacking is confidence in your worth, ability, or adequacy.

If you’re too vulnerable, these perceived deficits can leave you scrambling. To beg, borrow, or steal worth from external sources to mask the deficits.

Unfulfillment then leads to serious breakdowns and consequences, when left unchecked.

how do you beat your fears

Do beat your fears.

Dr. Neuharth, in his book “Secrets You Keep From Yourself,” offers one key question that I recommend we ask ourselves.

So we can start beating our fears and taking over them.

Here is his one-question formula:

“What am I afraid that I lack and how can I supply it?”

Brilliant question.

Imagine what would happen if each time you experience a fear (or, “perceived deficit”), you ask and work through that question.

You gain expansion-seeking rather than loss-avoidance. The way to go in beating your fears.

Do beat your fears.
