It’s Always Too Soon To Quit

It’s always too soon to quit. That’s what Norman Vincent Peale once advised.

Why do people quit when much is the reward?

After a couple of sessions with his wife, Bob quitted. “It’s uncomfortable. I’m afraid about what I’m seeing. I don’t want to go on with this pain,” he said.

Result?

His wife disappeared from the house with their little daughter. She could no longer take the pain of his unfaithfulness and addiction.

Bob went into a downward spiral when he found that out. He binged on alcohol and drugs. He’s on a path to quit on himself too.

Quitting. Giving up. Throwing in the towel.

Psychotherapy is a self growth process.

Many succeed in getting well in it. They’re the ones who heal and experience their rewards.

But a lot many also drop out of it to their own detriment. They’re the ones who remain stuck. Sick. And in ongoing misery.

Why do you give up when much is the reward? Not only for your self. But more so, for your relationships and your life as a whole.

Two strongest reasons we can think of to answer the why.

1. Your perspective is too limited.

2. Your progress is not always obvious.

Solution to your perspective issue is to see better and more deeply the whole picture of your life or circumstance.

Solution to your progress issue is to stay in the process to build “in you” first before it builds “for you” (reward).

Racked with private depression? Unmanageable addictions? Broken relationships? Getting tired and feel like quitting?

Remember what “grit” means. It’s “passion and perseverance for long term goals.”

Keep passionate and persevering in your process. You’ll reap your harvests. You’ll receive your rewards.

But you need to hang in there. Keep pressing forward. Stay on.

You may be closer to your goal or reward than you think.

It’s always too soon to quit.
