Be Strong At The Broken Places

Be strong at the broken places.

You learn that from literary great Ernest Hemingway.

“The world breaks everyone, and afterward many are strong at the broken places.”

Imagine a life without brokenness. Without problems. Without adverse circumstances. A life so easy and uncomplicated.

Life is going to be impoverished if this is so!

be strong at the broken places

It is brokenness, problems, and adverse circumstances that build our “muscles” in every aspect of life.

Mentally. Emotionally. Relationally. Financially. Physically. Spiritually. Morally.

In his “A Twentieth Century Testimony,” Malcolm Muggeride pens a piece of writing about the enduring value of painful life experiences.

He says,

“Contrary to what might be expected, I look back on experiences that at the time seemed especially desolating and painful with particular satisfaction. Indeed, I can say with complete truthfulness that everything I’ve learned in my 75 years in this world, everything that has truly enhanced and enlightened my existence, has been through affliction and not through happiness, whether pursued or attained. In other words, if it were ever possible to eliminate affliction from our earthly existence by means of some drug or medical mumbo-jumbo … the result would not be to make life delectable, but to make it too banal and trivial to be endurable.”

If we look at trees, observe which ones get to be strong or the strongest.

They’re the trees that withstood the fiercest storms. They’re the ones that have become deep-rooted and strong.

Are you lonely today? Have you been going through emotional trauma or depression? Are there heavy losses in your life right now?

Whatever it is, you can be hopeful. And even excited!

This difficult life experience can be the very agent that will make you strong in yourself as well as able to help others in a similar pain.

Be strong at the broken places.
