Temporary Escape Or Solution?

Temporary escape or solution?

“Everyone has escapes,” writes Nancy Potts in her book “Living Between The Times.”

“Some people overeat, others watch TV soap operas, become workaholics, enter on nonstop activities … try to dull the pain with alcohol or drugs. The possible ways to escape are endless. However, the end result is self-pity and a loss of self-respect.”

Now I’m not saying that some escapes, such as travel or art, don’t meet a need. They do, especially for rest or relief.

But the rest or relief they give is just “temporary escape.” Short-lived. Not solutions, only sedatives

temporary escape or solution?

Mary is into an addictive round of drinking and multiple casual sexual relationships.

Eventually, it catches up on her in the form of self-cutting and suicidal attempts.

The addiction is Mary’s vain attempt to escape from her persistent inner void or ache.

Only to discover that what she’s escaping has the ability to catch her!

As E. Leo Foster put it,

“I went to the club to escape my life and pretend I’m somebody else. Now I don’t know who I am anymore.”

A girl, like Mary, who travels that way knows that deep down she is escaping reality.

In our therapy sessions, Mary learns to see her addictive drinking and sexual activity as they really are.

A temporary escape, a grasping for the wind … and not the solution she’s looking for.

She is now unpacking. The real roots of her “infection.” The void, the ache – from which her addiction stems.

As she metabolizes her unprocessed inner wounds, her addiction begins to fade. Progressively. From an old self to a new self.

“We suffer primarily not from our vices or our weaknesses, but from our illusions. We are haunted, not by reality, but by those images we have put in their place.” — Daniel J. Boorstin, writer
