Psychology of Fake News

BAKIT KAYA MAY NANINIWALA AT GUMAGAWA NG KASINUNGALINGAN (FAKE NEWS)?

Why are there people who reject truth in favor of falsehood despite obvious evidence?

Let me tell you some reasons or causes of this.

Scriptures call it “deceitful heart.”
“The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked; who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9)

Psychologists call it “cognitive dissonance.”
Individual experiences mental discomfort from 2 contradictory values.

BIAS: clings to lie that confirms or aligns with pre-existing beliefs despite seeing contrary factual evidence

GROUPTHINK (social pressure): conforms to lie to avoid rejection from peers or ostracism from group

FEAR of CHANGE: afraid of losing status, relationships, stability, comfort or security so the preference to support falsehoods

FAKE NEWS: persuasive false narratives that twist truths or cover up lies

DEFENSE MECHANISM: such as denial or rationalization to protect from one’s psychological discomfort despite obvious evidences of reality or fact

PSYCHOPATH INFLUENCE: impact of a psychopath leader on the beliefs, mental and emotional states of people they lead through deception, charm, or manipulation

Jesus said, “ … you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32)

Jesus teaches that those who put their faith in Him and know the truth will lead to true freedom.
